Gabriel Medina – World champion.

Gabriel Medina has become the first ever Brazilian, and the equal youngest, men’s ASP World Champion. Riding the FCS II Performer template exclusively in 2014, Medina lead for most of the season and rose to the occasion in the last event to clinch the title over Kelly Slater and fellow team rider Mick Fanning.

The win was decided after Medina advanced through to the quarterfinals. The pressure then switched to Mick who was unable to progress through his round five heat which automatically handed Gabriel the title.

“I can’t believe it’s happened! This is a dream come true for me… I have some many people to thank, everyone who’ve helped me reach my goal.” Said an elated Medina.

For Gabriel the year started perfectly with a win on the Gold Coast. From there his form slumped until the Pacific leg of the tour where he claimed victories in Fiji and Tahiti. Wearing the yellow jersey, Gabriel was able to maintain his #1 rating all the way to the finish line.

Over the past few years Gabriel has positioned himself to make a run at the title, and in 2014 the stars aligned. With equipment playing a key role to his success, Gabriel has worked closely with FCS over the years on his fin sets ups to ensure his surfing is always at the highest level.

Following the release of the revolutionary FCS II system, Gabriel quickly gravitated to the Performer template for its versatility in all conditions. In 2014 a stronger and slightly heavier Gabriel switched from the medium to the large size Performer template due to an increase in his power output on a wave.

“The Performer works amazing in my boards, and at the different waves we visit on tour. It makes me confidant knowing the fin will respond when I need it to, and that’s important when you’re competing.”

Gabriel further fine-tuned his performance this year by changing between the Performance Core (PC) and the Performance Core Carbon (PCC) constructions depending on the location and the required flex.

FCS would like to congratulate both Gabriel Medina and Stephanie Gilmore on their respective World Titles, and for making 2014 such a amazing year for the spectators and the sport of surfing.

Since its inception into the market 17 ASP World Championship Tour events, and 5 ASP World Titles, have been won by surfers riding the FCS II system and fins.
